From what I understand it's up to the mapper in a source mod as to whether you can shoot through walls.

Partially. It is based on the material and thickness of the wall. If its a thin metal sheet, you bullets will pass through it with ease. If its a thick concrete/brick wall, it wont pass through.

Yeah, if i am in a firefight with someone, and the stars align (hes wounded, wall is thin, and I still have more ammo), I will just continue to fire at him through the wall until I find cover for a nice reload spot.

is there a particular unit thickness that allows for good penetration?

16 > will typically allow for bullet penetration. If you want bullets to go through easily, use something less than 8

Modern wars use full metal jacket! Yes, like the movie!
These bullets can hit you through the walls...
Jet fire, tank fire and lot of war vehicles can do it too!

IRL, the only thing thin walls stop when bullets rip through them, is your pulse.

I'm all for shooting through walls, it adds a certain dynamic.

Seriously depends on the weapon and the wall, but I like the idea, bound to happen. I know it certainly can, source'n'all.
